The acquisition by CSX and CPKC will create a new interchange in Alabama that will connect shippers in Mexico, Texas and the Southeast U.S.

Freight traffic between the U.S. and its neighbors is increasingly via truck, Bureau of Transportation Statistics figures show.

Roughly two million import and export containers are expected to move through the Port of Coos Bay each year once the new terminal is up and running.

The LA and Long Beach ports, which together account for roughly a third of all U.S. container imports, each had their busiest ever peak season.

Although the track at the derailment site has been reopened, the permit suspension will remain in place until the current train lineup is cleared. 

The railway would cross the Yavuz Sultan Selim suspension bridge, one of the longest and widest of its kind in the world.

The strike affects ports with the combined capacity to handle as much as half of all U.S. trade volumes.

Over the past two years, the share of Class I freight railroad employees who are provided paid sick days surged from 5% to 90%.
