The cold-chain industry is essential to the preservation of foods and beverages. But it also carries some key challenges, most notably when it comes to proper warehousing and storage.

Temperature control must be precise; inventory has to be tracked meticulously, and orders must be fulfilled quickly, to ensure that quality and safety are kept in check. It's a lot more complicated than dry-goods handling, requiring greater attention to detail within storage facilities and warehouses.

Cold storage prevents premature spoilage, preserves quality, and improves the longevity of perishable goods. Failure to follow proper procedures can result in illness, costly recalls, and erosion of consumer trust in the brand.

Traditionally, cold storage operations have leaned heavily on manual labor for critical tasks such as picking, packing and stock management. And while that can be effective in certain settings, it's inefficient and prone to human error.

Enter automation. Following is a look at some of the leading automation opportunities that are poised to transform cold chain storage. They can be deployed independently of one another, or as part of a complete cold-chain storage system in the warehouse.

Warehouse execution systems. WES software helps manage and streamline certain warehouse operations. Think of it as the control center of a facility, dictating picking, receiving and replenishment, and also helping to streamline the activities of other equipment.

Automatic storage and retrieval systems. AS/RS helps streamline productivity, enhance safety and drive cost savings. It automatically stores and retrieves goods using a combination of robots, cranes and other equipment. Types of AS/RS systems include unit load pallet, mini-load, high-density pallet shuttles, and shuttle racks.

All of those systems have pros and cons and are ideal for different environments. For instance, the unit load pallet AS/RS uses mechanical processes to perform warehouse activities and can achieve up to 99.9 % accuracy. Conversely, mini-load systems handle smaller items, like totes. High-density shuttles are ideal for high-density storage, and shuttle rack systems can help benefit fast-paced cold-storage environments.

Sort transfer vehicles. STVs are designed to sort and transport heavy loads such as pallets within the warehouse. They're fast, cost-effective and a practical way to streamline workflow. What's more, STVs can easily pair with AS/RS systems to create a fully automated warehouse system. Freezer-rated STVs are available for cold-chain operations, and are purpose-built to withstand the demands of cold-temperature environments.

Automation is the future of cold-chain storage. Take the necessary steps to begin adopting it today, so that you don't fall behind the competition and can continue to move your operations forward.
