Building Resilient Automotive Supply Chains in 2025

February 3, 2025
Jim Mancini, VP of North American Surface Transportation, C.H. Robinson

CH-Robinson-Mancini.pngAnalyst Insight: In the automotive industry, just-in-time inventory management relies on a precise and resilient supply chain. Even minor delays in the manufacturing or transport of a single part can create major headaches, leading to disruptions and driving up costs.

The growing complexities of global shipping are making the already fragile automotive supply chain even more difficult to manage. Whether it's the continued nearshoring boom, evolving geopolitical conflicts, or fluctuating consumer demand for electric vehicles, several factors will make 2025 difficult to navigate strategically without proper planning.

By taking the following steps, automotive shippers can mitigate risks to their supply chains and position themselves for success in the years ahead.

Enhance visibility across the supply chain. For too long, automotive companies have relied on incomplete supply chain data, creating blind spots in their shipping activities. As they face even more complex global events and market trends, the need for end-to-end visibility has never been greater.

The right technology and logistics provider will enable a more connected supply chain, and more accurate tracking of materials across modes of transportation. Predictive analytics and advanced visibility tools can provide highly accurate ETAs, and rapidly identify potential disruptions.

Look for technology that can aggregate shipment data into one unified information stream, ensuring visibility across suppliers, locations and modes. This type of information will keep automotive companies ahead of the curve with their materials, helping keep shipments on track while delivering the right parts at the best prices.

Identify freight consolidation opportunities. When analyzing trade lanes and suppliers for 2025, automotive manufacturers and suppliers should consider where they can consolidate, especially when they have a dense population of suppliers in the same region.

If multiple suppliers are regularly sending less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments from the same region to the same automotive manufacturer, consolidating shipments into one truckload can save valuable time and labor in the tracking and management of these shipments. Conversely, if a shipper isn’t completely filling a trailer, consolidating freight going to different destinations can eliminate waste.

Consolidation can also be cost effective when truckload rates are favorable compared to LTL rates. On the ocean side, if rates are rising, automotive companies could take advantage of a logistics provider’s ability to maximize container utilization. This could entail using less-than-containerload (LCL) shipping, and consolidating freight into a shared container, paying only for the space used versus the entire container.

Minimize cross-border disruptions and delays. As more automotive companies nearshore to Mexico, a cohesive cross-border shipping strategy is crucial to avoiding potential delays and disruptions.

A logistics provider with bilingual experts in Mexico can provide a clear understanding of important requirements and regulations pertinent to shipping across the border. Having resources along the border is critical when congestion, weather or geopolitical conflict create delays. They can quickly arrange alternative routes or modes to keep freight flowing.

The right facilities can also help ensure smooth operations at the border. A large cross-dock with a substantial number of dock doors and extra space in the middle can boost throughput as freight arrives, and is transferred between trucks at the border.

Outlook: The pace of change in the automotive industry is only accelerating, reinforcing the need for the right supply chain strategy and expertise. As automotive companies prepare for 2025, prioritizing these actions will build agility into plans and help companies navigate disruption with renewed confidence.
