Walmart Canada is planning to invest roughly C$6.5 billion ($4.51 billion) over the next five years to build dozens of new stores and distribution centers across the country.

The initiative will start with a distribution center Ontario scheduled to open in the spring of 2025, followed by an Ontario Walmart supercenter set for the summer of 2025, a second Ontario store later that same year, and then three more supercenters in Alberta by 2027. According to a January 30 release from Walmart Canada, the distribution center will be the company's "most advanced facility" in the country. The company also announced that Canada Cartage — the country's largest fleet service provider — will be buying and operating Walmart Canada's fleet business moving forward.

“Walmart Canada is on an ambitious growth journey to serve even more Canadians – better and differently than ever before," Walmart regional CEO Gui Loureiro said.

Walmart Canada currently has more than 400 stores in the country, with more than 100,000 employees. The company previously invested C$3.5 billion in 2020 to modernize 180 stores, open four new stores, and build five new distribution centers in Canada. Walmart is looking to grow its brick-and-mortar footprint in the U.S. as well, with plans to build or convert more than 150 large-format stores over the next five years.
