Port Houston saw a 29% reduction in channel availability in February, after foggy weather disrupted the movement of cargo through the area for half the month.

“Weather challenges can be great disruptors for maritime operations, and in February we were hit hard," Port Houston CEO Charlie Jenkins said. 

According to a March 31 release from the port, Port Houston handled 325,424 TEUs in February 2025, a 13% decline year-over-year, with an estimated 14 days in February impacted by fog. Because of those weather-related delays, the port's Bayport and Barbours Cut terminals saw 20 fewer vessels in February compared to the same month in 2024. As a result, total tonnage at the port was down 5% year-to-date. 

Even so, Jenkins noted that the port has already seen a cargo rebound in March as weather conditions have improved, and that projects to improve infrastructure at public terminals remain on track. General cargo at Port Houston is up 9% year-to-date as well, thanks to strong volumes of lumber and plywood.
