Enterprise resource planning debuted by that name in the 1990s, as a successor to material requirements planning. ERP offered businesses a compelling means of managing inventory, accounting, finance and sales. But for many, implementation proved to be a massive headache, requiring years and millions of dollars to complete. So is it any easier now? And how does modern-day ERP differ from that earlier incarnation?
